Cemeteries and monuments in Kłodzko: a 2005 memorial, a pillory replica, a cemetery from 1892 and the chapel of Duke Jan.
Which monuments can you actually see in Kłodzko?
Two of them. The Monument in Homage to the Defenders of the Homeland stands in Sybiraków Park, not far from the centre. It was unveiled on 3 May 2005 on the initiative of local veterans, and the sculpture shows a Polish soldier of September 1939. A granite base carries an inscription about remembering the past as the strength of a nation.
The other is the pillory on the market square. It is a replica of a pillory that stood on the square until 1793, rebuilt in 2011 from sandstone brought from Radków. The monument is 460 centimetres tall, with a figure of a peasant carrying a sack of grain on the plinth. Both sites are free.
There is a third address you will not find anymore: the Friedrich Ludwig Jahn monument. It was unveiled on 20 July 1912 on the former Minoritenstraße, today's Daszyńskiego Street. It has not survived, so do not look for it on the ground. The page tells its story.
Where are the Municipal Cemetery and the Duke Jan mausoleum?
The Municipal Cemetery was founded on 30 April 1892 as a Catholic burial ground. In 1945 it became a municipal one, open to all residents. It is one of the largest necropolises in the Kłodzko county and still in use, with a historic section, a war plot and historic chapels. Keep quiet there, as at any working cemetery.
The Mausoleum of Duke Jan of Ziębice is a small neo-Baroque sandstone chapel built in 1904-1905 to a design by Ludwig Schneider. It stands on Wielisławska Street, a few metres from the edge of the Zagórze district, and commemorates the duke's death in battle against the Hussites in 1428. Despite the name of the listing, the chapel lies within Kłodzko.
How do you fit these places into a walk around town?
The park monument and the pillory are close to the centre, so they slot easily into a stroll around the market square.
