Architecture in Kłodzko: a fortress built since the Middle Ages, underground routes, two bridges, Prussian warehouses and a Jesuit museum.

What was built in Kłodzko with defence in mind?

The Kłodzko Fortress is a vast fortification system on the hill above town, built in stages from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. The first wooden defences stood here before 1114, in the 13th and 14th centuries the stronghold was rebuilt as a stone castle, and in 1557-1560 Ernest Lorenz Kirschke added the middle and lower castle. Today it is a museum with preserved 17th- and 18th-century fortifications, surface routes and kilometres of tunnels.

At its foot stand the Prussian barracks warehouses from 1748-1751, along Łukasińskiego and Kolejowa streets. They held barracks, food stores and a military hospital, and in 1984 they were entered in the register of monuments. Today they serve residential and storage purposes.

What do the underground and the centre hide?

Cellars under the old town were extended from the 13th century. The Underground Tourist Route is about 700 metres of routes with a dozen or so themed rooms, opened in 1976, and all of it runs below ground. The Museum of the Kłodzko Land has occupied a former Jesuit convict since 1971; earlier it was in the commandant's palace by the market square, but subsiding medieval cellars forced a move. The collections cover coins, pewter, Silesian clocks and art glass.

Which bridges are worth a look?

The Iron Bridge of 1882-1883 is a riveted steel arch over the Nysa Kłodzka, once the Horse Bridge. The footbridge on Daszyńskiego Street is a stone crossing for pedestrians and cyclists over the Młynówka; the present structure dates from the late 19th century, after earlier ones were wrecked by floods.

Kłodzko also works for a trip for two, so see For couples, and for a rainy day For rainy days. Sacred buildings are under churches and monasteries, and the whole town under Kłodzko attractions.
