Free attractions in Kłodzko: monuments, five hills, a cemetery and a chapel. Ten places where you will not buy a ticket.

What can you see in Kłodzko town for free?

In the centre start with the pillory on the market square. It is a replica of the old pillory that stood here until 1793, rebuilt in 2011 from sandstone from Radków. It is 460 centimetres tall, and a figure of a peasant with a sack of grain stands on the plinth. Not far from the centre, in Sybiraków Park, stands the Monument in Homage to the Defenders of the Homeland from 2005, with a sculpture of a Polish soldier of September 1939 and an inscription on the granite base about remembering the past as the strength of a nation. Both sites are close to the Kłodzko Fortress, so they are easy to combine in one walk.

The list also includes the Friedrich Ludwig Jahn monument, but you cannot see it: unveiled in 1912 on today's Daszyńskiego Street, it has not survived. The page still tells its story, so you will not waste time looking for it.

Which hills in Kłodzko cost nothing?

All five in our catalogue. Forteczna Góra is 369 metres high, about 300 metres from the market square, and is occupied by the Kłodzko Fortress fortifications, visible in the town panorama. Szpitalna Górka (about 320 metres) is a former municipal brickworks site in Ustronie, now meadows and fields.

Further from the centre lies Szyndzielnia, 431 metres in the Bardzkie Mountains, about 2.8 kilometres east of the centre, with a 19th-century lookout tower you cannot enter. Wzgórze Marii is 365 metres and Krzyżna Góra just under 326. About the last one we are frank: sources describe no viewpoint or trail there, so treat it as a stroll, not a destination.

Are cemeteries and chapels free too?

Yes, but these are places of remembrance, not entertainment. The Municipal Cemetery was founded on 30 April 1892 and today is an active necropolis with a historic section, historic chapels and a war plot. It was first meant only for Catholics, and in 1945 it became a municipal cemetery open to all residents. The Mausoleum of Duke Jan of Ziębice on Wielisławska Street is a neo-Baroque chapel from 1904-1905, commemorating the duke's death in battle against the Hussites in 1428. Visit them quietly and respectfully, as any working cemetery. The chapel is a separate small building on a central plan, designed by Ludwig Schneider and built of sandstone.

How do you plan a free day in Kłodzko?

Market square and pillory in the morning, then a walk up Forteczna Góra, and one of the farther hills in the afternoon. For a two-day plan add places with character, which you also see from outside, or the full set of cemeteries and monuments. If it rains, go to the For rainy days list. The whole overview is under Kłodzko attractions, and free addresses from across the region are gathered on free attractions in Lower Silesia. Further along the route lie Nowa Ruda and Szczytna.
