Kłodzko for couples: a fortress with tunnels, a historic square, two bridges and a Baroque statue. Seven places for a shared day.
With a walk around Bolesław Chrobry Square. It is a medieval market square with a town hall, a Marian column, a well and historic tenement houses, and a clear slope. A few steps on, on Kościelny Square, opposite the western portal of the collegiate church, stands the Baroque statue of St John of Nepomuk from around 1720, funded by Baron Maksymilian Mitrowski, the fortress commander. His name and titles are carved on the plinth, and the saint wears liturgical robes with mannerist folds. It is a good spot for the first photo of the trip.
The Underground Tourist Route is about 700 metres long with a dozen or so themed rooms about the town's history. The whole route runs underground, so neither rain nor sun bothers it. Above, on the hill, lies the Kłodzko Fortress: a preserved system of 17th- and 18th-century fortifications with surface routes and countermine tunnels. You can spread the visit over a few hours, and for a couple it is also a chance to see the town from above. You will also learn that the first wooden defences stood here before 1114.
The Iron Bridge is a riveted steel arch over the Nysa Kłodzka from 1882-1883, once the Horse Bridge. If you prefer quiet, take the footbridge on Daszyńskiego Street, a stone crossing for pedestrians over the Młynówka, linking the Old Town with the Piasek suburb. Below the fortress you will see the Prussian barracks warehouses of 1748-1751, entered in the register of monuments in 1984. They once held barracks, food stores and a military hospital, and today they serve residential and storage purposes, so you see them from outside. The footbridge has a stormy past: the first medieval crossing fell victim to floods, and the present stone one dates from the late 19th century.
