Szklarska Poręba solo means peaks of the Karkonosze and the Izera Mountains, a few intimate museums and a disused quartz mine. Choose a plan for yourself.
What can you do on a solo trip to Szklarska Poręba?
The list holds two kinds of places: peaks and rocks you walk to at your own pace, and small museums where nobody rushes you. All of them carry the solo tag. You can combine them: mountains in the morning and an exhibition in the afternoon, or the other way round when the weather changes.
Which museums suit a day on your own?
The Mineralogical Museum is in a villa from 1885 and shows fossils, including trilobites, and the Carboniferous Forest, while the mineral collection includes calcites and stalactites from Wojcieszów and metal ores from Trepča. The Juna Earth Museum occupies the Walloon Watchtower and presents minerals from the Karkonosze. The House of Carl and Gerhart Hauptmann is a wooden villa from the late 19th century, a branch of the Karkonosze Museum. The Karkonosze Centre of Ecological Education describes the nature of the mountains and has a tactile model of the Karkonosze, large-format panoramas and captions in four languages.
It is more playful in the Toy Museum, where you build with LEGO bricks yourself and play retro games. Unusual is the Cheap Wine Museum in the Walloon Cottage, with over a hundred bottles and several hundred labels, and technology is shown by the Jelenia Góra Power Industry Museum in a former water-powered plant. All of them are described under museums in Szklarska Poręba.
Where to hike on your own?
Start with Szrenica (1,362 m). A cable car runs to the top, where you will find a viewpoint and a mountain hut. Wysoka Kopa (1,127.6 m) is the highest peak of the Izera Mountains. Among the lower ones are Zwalisko (1,047 m), Izerskie Garby (1,084 m), Cicha Równia (1,001 m) and Babiniec (998 m). Czarna Góra (965 m) has scenic rocks and walking trails, just northwest of the centre. Czerwone Skałki are granite formations at 952 m, between Jakuszyce and Szklarska Poręba.
When planning a hike on your own, check the trails. No marked trail leads to the top of Kozi Grzbiet, Krogulec, Kobyła or Tkacka Góra. Calmer goals are Danek (755 m), Warzelnia (662 m), Gonciarek (631 m) and Kocierz (929 m).
What else belongs in the plan?
The "Stanisław" quartz mine is a disused open-pit mine at 1,050 m, considered the highest of its kind in central Europe. Milky and pink quartz was extracted here from a vein deposit 60 to 100 metres thick, containing 97 to 100 percent silica, and it went to the glass, metallurgical and electronics industries. The pit also held pyrite, fluorite, amethyst and other minerals. Zakręt Śmierci on the Sudeten Road is a viewpoint with a panorama of the Karkonosze and the Jelenia Góra Valley.
