Neoclassical merchant's residence from 1803, for a century the seat of the Porcelain Museum

Museums in Wałbrzych tell the story of coal and porcelain. Go underground in a former mine, see a neoclassical palace and a mining museum.

Where can you visit a former coal mine?

The Stara Kopalnia Science and Art Centre sits on the site of the former Julia mine. The revitalised complex holds an industry museum, a ceramics studio and a contemporary art gallery, and the tour includes the underground workings. There is also a children's zone. The main Julia shaft, opened in 1867, reaches 611 metres down, and the last coal wagon came up on 20 September 1996.

Teresa mine has a different feel. It operated in 1864-1991, is now a listed complex and houses a private museum of mining and motorsport. It lies in the Rusinowa district, by Noworudzka Street.

Where is the Porcelain Museum?

It is in the Albertich Palace, a neoclassical building from 1801-1803 in the city centre. It has a U-shaped plan and the date 1801 on its facade. The municipal museum has been here since 1926. The palace and both mining sites carry the "Na deszcz" (rainy day) tag in our listings, so they are safe bets for poor weather.

What else fits around a museum visit?

After a museum it is worth getting some fresh air: hills and peaks are collected under mountains, and a plan for poorer weather is on Wałbrzych in the rain. With children, look at places for kids. The whole city is on attractions in Wałbrzych, and museums from across the region are listed in museums in Lower Silesia.
