Beautiful views in Wałbrzych come from viewpoints and peaks of the Wałbrzych Mountains. See where to go for a panorama and how to plan a route.

Where can you see a panorama without a long climb?

The easiest start is Góra Parkowa. The hill is 508 m above sea level, the tallest in Jan III Sobieski Park, between the Śródmieście, Nowe Miasto and Stary Zdrój districts. From the viewpoint you see Stary Zdrój and the towers of Książ Castle. The second viewpoint is the spot by Różanka in the Wałbrzych Mountains, near the Książ castle complex. Lookout towers on Chełmiec and Borowa lie nearby. Both viewpoints are free, and Góra Parkowa also carries the "Dla par" (for couples) tag.

Which peaks suit a longer trip?

The highest is Barbarka at 635 m. It is wooded, and remains of a lookout tower from 1905-1925 survive. Not much lower is Zamkowa Góra (618 m), above the Glinik district, with the ruins of Nowy Dwór castle on top. Further north runs a ridge with Lisi Kamień (613 m), Ptasia Kopa (590 m) and Czarnota (526 m), and in the middle of that ridge lies Czarnuszka (562 m).

What will you see besides the view?

On Zamkowa Góra wait the ruins of Nowy Dwór castle, raised at the turn of the 14th century and reached by the yellow trail. Barbarka hides a mining history: in the mid-18th century Baron von Czettritz-Neuhaus opened the Ernestine coal mine on its northern slope, and its adit was 920 metres long. On the slopes of Lisi Kamień you will see traces of silver ore mining that began in the 14th century, and erratic boulders left by an ancient glacier. Ptasia Kopa, once called Vogelkoppe in German, is steep and also bears marks of early mining. Within a few kilometres of Czarnota lie Książ Castle, the Spa Park in Szczawno-Zdrój and the Stara Kopalnia Science and Art Centre.

How do you build a route to see more?

For a short outing choose Góra Parkowa and finish with a walk around the centre. For a longer day plan the ridge in the hills. Lisi Kamień, Ptasia Kopa and Czarnota form one even ridge, so you can link them in a single trip. Czarnuszka lies less than a kilometre from Lisi Kamień, on the same ridge running from Borowa to Czarnota, and the range also has a lookout tower on Borowa. Every one of these places carries the "Bezpłatne" (free) tag, and the approach is by mountain trails, so check the route and markings before you go.
