Parks and nature in Wałbrzych: historic parks, a winter garden from 1913 and a nature reserve on the Pełcznica. Here is where to take a walk.

Which park should you pick for a city walk?

Czettritz Park covers about 5 hectares in the city centre, by Moniuszki Street. It was laid out in 1886, is listed as a monument and holds around 70 species and varieties of trees and shrubs, seven of them exotic, such as the California fir and the Catawba rhododendron. Rusinowa Municipal Park is larger: it appeared around 1930 on the site of an old forest and covers about 27 hectares. You will find outdoor sculptures, two ponds and a 19th-century entrance gate, and regeneration work has been under way since 2018. Both parks are free.

Where can you see plants from different climate zones?

The Palm House on Wrocławska Street is a winter garden built in 1911-1913 for Prince Henryk XV von Pless, owner of nearby Książ Castle. Several hundred plant species grow under the glass roof, and the walls are lined with volcanic tuff from Mount Etna. There is also a bonsai exhibition. It makes a good contrast to the parks: greenery under glass versus rock in the reserve.

Where is the wilder landscape?

The Przełomy pod Książem nature reserve protects the rocky valleys of the Pełcznica and Szczawnik streams in Książ Landscape Park. It was created in 2000, covers 230.95 hectares, and the valley slopes are steep and rocky. Want to climb higher? Look at the Wałbrzych mountains.
