Wałbrzych solo means peaks, castles, mines, museums and quiet churches that are good to visit alone. Choose a plan at your own pace.

Where should you hike when going alone?

Most places tagged "Solo" lie in the Wałbrzych Mountains, and the peaks are free. Barbarka (635 m above sea level) keeps remains of an 18th-century mine and of a lookout tower from 1905-1925. Zamkowa Góra (618 m) is topped by the ruins of Nowy Dwór castle. Lisi Kamień (613 m) shows traces of old silver ore mining, and Ptasia Kopa (590 m) is steep and also bears marks of mining. Czarnuszka (562 m) and Czarnota (526 m) sit on the same ridge as Lisi Kamień and Ptasia Kopa. The approach is by mountain trails, so check the route and markings before you go.

If you want a view without a long hike, pick Góra Parkowa. It is 508 m above sea level, lies in Jan III Sobieski Park and shows Stary Zdrój and the towers of Książ Castle. The viewpoint by Różanka, near the Książ castle complex, is a similar goal.

Which castle suits a solo expedition?

Książ is the third-largest castle in Poland and a full-day route. Less obvious is Stary Książ Castle, an artificial ruin rebuilt in the late 18th century as a scenic feature for Książ. The real medieval ruins are Nowy Dwór Castle, reached by the yellow trail. It went through a fire in 1581, after which the Czettritz family left it.

What can you see indoors at your own pace?

The Stara Kopalnia Science and Art Centre combines an underground tour with an industry museum, a ceramics studio and a contemporary art gallery. The main Julia shaft reaches 611 metres down. For more of the mining atmosphere, go to the Teresa mine, which operated in 1864-1991 and where a private museum of mining and motorsport operates. In the centre waits the Albertich Palace with the Porcelain Museum. The Palm House from 1913 lets you rest among plants under a glass roof, with walls lined with tuff from Etna. For quiet, try the Pod Atlantami Library on the Market Square, the branch of the Lower Silesian Pedagogical Library at Market Square 6, or the multimedia branch in Podzamcze.

Where can you learn about the city's places of worship in peace?

Wałbrzych has many historic churches that suit silence. St Barbara's Church in Stary Zdrój is a neo-Gothic building from 1870 with an organ from 1931. The Sanctuary of the Relic of the True Cross in Podzamcze has held the title of diocesan shrine since 2006. In Podgórze stand St Francis of Assisi Church and the neo-Gothic former All Saints Orthodox church from the early 20th century, and in Piaskowa Góra St Joseph the Worker's Church, consecrated in 1911 as a Protestant church. The brick Church of the Immaculate Conception, consecrated in 1912, has three altars and an organ by Schlag & Sons. The sites tied to the synagogues on Mickiewicza Street call for a factual tone: nothing remains of the former synagogue of 1883, burned in 1938. A walk can begin on Plac Kościelny, the oldest square in town.
