Wałbrzych in the rain: mines, a porcelain museum, a water park, play rooms and a bowling alley. See what to do when the weather spoils your plans.

What can you visit under a roof when it rains?

Wałbrzych's industrial history offers the most choice. The Stara Kopalnia Science and Art Centre is the revitalised Julia mine with an industry museum, a ceramics studio, a contemporary art gallery, a tour of the underground and a children's zone. The main Julia shaft, opened in 1867, reaches 611 metres down, and the last coal wagon came up on 20 September 1996. The Teresa mine shows another side: it operated in 1864-1991 and now houses a private museum of mining and motorsport, and its buildings are on the register of monuments. Add the Albertich Palace, a neoclassical palace from 1801-1803 that has housed the municipal museum since 1926, now the Porcelain Museum. The building has two storeys and three wings forming a U-shaped plan.

Where can you go with kids when it pours?

The youngest have the most options. ExploraPark is an indoor centre where children test physics and sound for themselves, walk through a mirror maze and solve quizzes. The play rooms have separate age zones: Cinema Fun on Andersa Street, Kinderplaneta in the Victoria gallery and Fit Style Kids on Wyszyńskiego Street. Older children can burn off energy at Jump Planet, a trampoline park with the CardioWall, a Ninja course, a climbing wall and an Air Bag cushion. The play rooms and the trampoline park all have separate zones or classes for different age groups. More ideas are under things for children.

Where can you stay active despite the weather?

Aqua Zdrój is the largest sports facility in the Sudetes, with a water park and pools. The complex stands in the Biały Kamień district at the foot of Chełmiec hill, with a hotel and restaurant on site. At Crazy Carts in the Victoria gallery you can drive drifting go-karts, and at the Kręgielnia-Piaskownica bowling alley you can bowl and have dinner from an Italian menu. The indoor Bunkier range on Sportowa Street has four 25-metre lanes and welcomes people without a firearms permit. The other range, Żelazna, is outdoors, so in the rain choose Bunkier.

What suits a calmer day?

The Jerzy Szaniawski Drama Theatre runs a current repertoire, and tickets can be bought online. The theatre stands by Theatre Square, which also has an amphitheatre and a sports hall. It is quiet in the Pod Atlantami Library, in a historic house on the Market Square, open since 1945. Wałbrzych's libraries also include a branch of the Lower Silesian Pedagogical Library at Market Square 6 and the Multimedia Library Branch in Podzamcze.

How do you plan a rainy day from morning to evening?

In the morning pick the place where you will spend the most time: a mine tour or a visit to the water park. After lunch something active fits, such as go-karts, bowling or trampolines, and at the end a calm stop, such as a play or the library. Most places on this page share the "Na deszcz" tag, but always check opening hours and entry rules with the organiser.
