Ice rinks in Lower Silesia: ice in Wrocław, Lubin, Strzelin, Twardogóra and Jelenia Góra, with skate hire on site. Pick your rink.

Where can you skate in Wrocław?

Wrocław has three addresses and each has its own character. The Tarczyński Arena ice rink is at Śląska Avenue 1, on one level of a multi-storey car park visible from the avenue. Pedestrians enter from the esplanade level, and drivers are directed through gate D. The ice is an oval loop fenced with protective barriers. The longest straight is about 55 metres and the width about 7 metres. Up to 100 people can skate at once, so expect a crowd in season.

In Nowy Dwór, the WCT Spartan ice and roller rink on Jaksonowicka Street is an indoor roller rink with a professional surface from April to November and turns into an ice rink in winter. There are two tracks: a 200-metre speed track 6 metres wide and a 600-metre street track 8 metres wide, which is free and open to all. On site you can hire roller skates, ice skates and protective gear, and the venue runs roller-skating courses for children and adults.

The third address is the Spiska Training Centre under the WCT Spartan brand, an open-access sports facility in Anders Park at Spiska 1. It combines an ice rink, indoor and outdoor tennis courts you can book by the slot, a gym with a sauna, and a room for fitness and spinning. It also runs tennis and roller-skating lessons and holiday day camps for children. It is a good place if someone in the family prefers tennis or the gym while another wants skates.

Is there a rink in summer too?

Several venues change purpose with the seasons. In Wrocław, WCT Spartan in Nowy Dwór is an ice rink in winter and a roller rink from April to November. In Jelenia Góra, the Kilińskiego ice and roller rink operates on Kilińskiego Street as part of a sports complex managed by Termy Cieplickie. In winter it is an ice rink, and outside the winter season a roller rink. That arrangement lets you use the surface for most of the year, changing only the activity.

In Strzelin, the ice rink at General Leopold Okulicki Street 10 is seasonal. After winter the same slab serves as a roller rink or a tennis court. Check the exact schedule for the change with the operator. Skate hire is on site, so you do not need to bring your own.

Which rinks are outdoor and seasonal?

The Municipal Ice Rink in Twardogóra is run by the local GOSiR sports centre. It is an outdoor sheet on Gdańska Street, an oval loop about 114 metres long with an area of about 800 square metres. The hire shop has over 150 pairs of figure and hockey skates in sizes 29 to 47, protective helmets including smaller ones for children, and skate sharpening. The rink runs in the winter months and closes at the end of February as the weather warms. During the season it is open Tuesday to Friday in the afternoon, and you should check exact hours with the operator.

In Lubin, the Regional Sports Centre ice rink at Odrodzenia 28b is the largest on this list. The ice covers 1,800 square metres, and next to it runs a separate 250-metre speed track, which sets it apart from typical small town rinks. The season usually lasts from December to the end of February, after which the rink closes for the rest of the year. The hire shop has 500 pairs of skates and helmets, so you do not need your own gear. The venue also runs a skating school.

How do you choose a rink for a family?

With children it is easiest to pick a place with hire and facilities. Twardogóra has helmets in smaller sizes, and Lubin has a skating school and a large sheet where it is easier to avoid collisions. In Wrocław, WCT Spartan runs courses for children, and the Spiska centre runs day camps. If you want city skating, Tarczyński Arena is a good fit, with entry from the esplanade.

Learning goes faster on rinks with barriers. Start with a short session and ask about rules for beginners. Take warm gloves and socks, because hands freeze on ice faster than feet in hired skates. A helmet is available in many places, so an adult learning from scratch should use one too.

How do you plan a visit?

The skating season runs mainly from December to the end of February, and hours differ by day of the week. Check them on the venue's page before you set off, because they can change from day to day. At outdoor rinks consider the weather: a warm spell shortens the season. At indoor sites such as Tarczyński Arena, the plan does not depend on the weather.

If you want to make a day of it, think of a combination: skates in the morning, and in the afternoon the gym or a court at Spiska, or roller skates on the street track on Jaksonowicka. Outside winter the same addresses offer roller skating, and in Strzelin even tennis.
