an escape room with three scenarios for groups, families and companies, running for over a decade

Escape rooms in Lower Silesia: puzzle rooms in Wrocław, Karpacz, Jelenia Góra and Legnica, plus a city game and a maze in a cornfield.

Which escape room should you pick in Wrocław?

Most puzzle rooms in the region are in Wrocław, so it helps to compare them by group type. EXIT19.PL runs 13 rooms in three central locations, including one on Ofiar Oświęcimskich Street. Themes include fantasy and adventure, horror, a historical mystery set in Wrocław, a sci-fi time travel story and an action room. Rooms are for groups of two to seven, and some have age limits: players aged 12 or 16 and over. A session lasts from 60 to 101 minutes.

Let Me Out sits on the second floor on Bernardyńska Street and offers six rooms: Sherlock Holmes, Wonderland, Death Penalty, Psychiatric Ward, Prison and The Secret of the Forest Book. Each game lasts 60 minutes, runs in Polish or English, and you book online. The venue can host up to 30 people at once across all rooms, so it suits a bigger crew that wants to play several rooms in parallel.

Secret Room & Brain Code is on Kazimierza Wielkiego Street in the Old Town, near the Market Square. Games last 60 or 90 minutes. Groups are two to five people, and the room called Prosektorium takes up to six. The venue is set up for team building and company events, as well as name-day parties and hen and stag nights.

In Szczepin, Escape Bus operates at Robotnicza 3. It offers three scenarios: Rastamobil, Hijacked Plane and 997. Games are for groups of 2-4 and last 75-90 minutes. The company has been running for over a decade and serves families, friends and corporate groups. Piwnica-Quest in the Przedmieście Świdnickie district has four original rooms. Schron Bankowy ("Bank Bunker") is a crime game for 60 minutes at difficulty 3 out of 5, for players aged 10 and over. Fantazja is a fairy-tale set at difficulty 2 out of 5, also 60 minutes. Midnight Killer II is a 90-minute thriller at the top difficulty, for adults or players from 16 with an adult.

Where can you take children to a puzzle room?

If you plan an outing with younger kids, you have a few sensible options. Kwatera Zagadek Exitus on plac Solidarności in Szczepin is a puzzle room designed for children. It offers individual entries, family visits, birthdays and bookings for school groups. It is not far from the centre, close to the National Forum of Music, the Town Hall and the Market Square, so you can follow the game with a stroll through the Old Town.

Another family option is Moonstreet, a city game played on Wrocław's streets. You start at a set point, send the message "START" in a chat and receive clues on your phone. As you solve puzzles you move between points in the city and uncover the story. There is no mandatory advance booking, so you can plan on the spot. Scenarios differ in range and length: "Król Dwumiasta" (King of the Two Cities) follows a route of about 3 kilometres and takes about 2.5 hours. Piwnica-Quest also has rooms for players from 10, so older kids will find something there too.

Can you play an escape room outside Wrocław?

Yes, and it makes a good rainy-day plan in the mountains. In Karpacz, Escape Room Karpacz Pokoje Tajemnic is at Konstytucji 3 Maja 57. The game lasts 60 minutes, and among the offer is a western-themed room. The venue takes organised groups, birthdays and team events. Book through the official site.

In Jelenia Góra, King Of The Lock on Teatralna Street has three scenarios, two of them set in the Karkonosze: "Chojnik: Kunegunda's Mission" for 60 minutes and 3-4 people, and "Odwiert Karkonosze: Whisper of the Depths" for 75 minutes and 4-6 people. The third is "Vikings - Retrieve the Amulet", 30 minutes for 2-3 people, a short warm-up. Games are in Polish and suit different levels of experience.

In Legnica, LockER is in the centre on Najświętszej Marii Panny Street, near the market square, the cathedral and the Piast Castle. Advance booking is required, and players under 16 may take part only with an adult. You enter via an intercom on the second floor, so know that before you wander outside the door.

What is an outdoor escape room like?

If you are tired of cramped rooms, the maize maze in Pełczyce offers a different format. It is a seasonal attraction on 7 hectares of field, with paths totalling over 4 kilometres. The game uses GPS location: you walk the route and scan QR codes at checkpoints. Each code opens a question, and correct answers count towards the season's ranking. Questions fall into four blocks, including general knowledge, farming and fairy tales in a version for younger players. It is a good option for a family trip out of town.

How do you prepare for a game, and what should you watch for?

You usually book ahead, especially at weekends. Check the venue's own site for hours and capacity, because details in the listings can change. Match the scenario to the youngest player: some rooms have limits of 10, 12 or 16. A group of 2-4 fits most scenarios. For groups of 5-7, check the capacity of the specific room, as it differs between venues.

When choosing what to play, go by mood: crime and thriller for adults, fairy tale or western for families, a city game if you prefer movement to a tight room. Afterwards there is time for coffee or a walk: Escape Bus, Exitus and EXIT19.PL are close to the centre of Wrocław, and LockER in Legnica is near the market square.
