Theatres in Lower Silesia: drama, puppet, mime and comedy stages in Wrocław and the region. See where to go and how to buy a ticket.
What theatres work in the region?
Most stages are in Wrocław, but good theatres also stand in Jelenia Góra, Wałbrzych and Świdnica. This page gathers municipal, private, puppet, mime and inclusive companies, as well as places linked with theatre, such as a museum and a theatre square. Almost all carry the Couples and Rainy Day tags, so an evening at the theatre works in any weather.
Repertoire changes every week, so do not look for show titles here. Instead you will find the profile of each stage: whether it is for adults or children, classical or light, in a historic building or in a former railway station.
Where to go to the theatre in Wrocław?
The Polish Theatre in Wrocław is a municipal institution that has worked since 1949 and has carried its present name since 1969. It plays on three stages, and its main seat is in a historic building from 1906 on Gabrieli Zapolskiej Street. The building was designed by Walter Hentschel as an operetta house, in an innovative reinforced-concrete construction whose solutions later influenced the Centennial Hall.
The Wrocław Puppet Theatre has worked since 1946 in the building of a former merchants' society club at 4 Teatralny Square. Its repertoire is for children, young people and adults, so it is one of few places where a three-year-old and an adult couple can go on one occasion. It carries the Solo tag because a puppet show is also good on your own. The Komedia Theatre stands on the same square. It was founded in 1997 as a private stage, and comedies dominate its bill for viewers looking for a light evening.
For lovers of movement and gesture there is the Wrocław Pantomime Theatre at 16 Dębowa Avenue in Borek. It was founded in 1956 by Henryk Tomaszewski, and its wordless performances have been given on every continent except Antarctica. Arka Theatre is an inclusive theatre: besides professional actors, actors with intellectual disabilities perform on stage, and the company has worked since 1993. Ad Spectatores is a private theatre that plays on several stages in the city, including the Burgher Brewery and the Attic Stage at 46C Ruska Street.

What else links to theatre in Wrocław?
You need not limit yourself to the performance. Teatralny Square joins Świdnicka Street with Teatralna and Widok, and the Wrocław Opera, the Puppet Theatre and the Hotel Monopol stand by it. The former Zwingerplatz was created in the area of the old space between the walls, near the vanished Świdnicka Gate. This area is a good base for an evening, because the Market Square and the Town Hall are not far away.
During the day you can visit the Theatre Museum, a branch of the Municipal Museum of Wrocław in the former south wing of the Royal Palace on Wolności Square. The permanent exhibition includes the restored apartment of Henryk Tomaszewski, and the collection holds theatre puppets from Japan, Mexico and Australia. The visit suits solo travellers and a rainy day. Another unusual place is Wrocław Świebodzki, the oldest surviving passenger railway station in Wrocław, where train traffic stopped in 1991. Today it houses a theatre and a market.
Where to find theatre outside Wrocław?
In Jelenia Góra there is the Cyprian Kamil Norwid Theatre, one of the oldest working drama theatres in Lower Silesia. The building was created in 1904 as the House of Arts and Associations, designed by Alfred Daehmel in the form of the so-called Jelenia Góra Art Nouveau. It has worked without a break for over a hundred years and has carried Norwid's name since 1974. If you plan a weekend in the Karkonosze, it is a good evening item after a day in the mountains.
In Wałbrzych the Jerzy Szaniawski Drama Theatre runs a current repertoire for audiences of different ages, with online tickets. The theatre has a separate section, Accessible Theatre, with information for people with disabilities. Next to it stands Teatralny Square with a sports hall and a municipal amphitheatre that locals call the "Acropolis": twenty-nine columns set in an arc, with a white lamp ball on each. Summer concerts and open-air cinema screenings take place there.
In Świdnica works the Świdnica Centre of Culture, the largest cultural institution in the town. It has a hall by the Market Square with 315 seats and the Bolko Club at 11 Grunwaldzki Square with a hall for 300 and the Upstairs Cafe. The centre has its own artistic ensembles.
How to buy a ticket and choose a show?
The repertoire of every stage is in the portal's event calendar. Choose a town or a type of event, then press the Buy ticket button, which leads to KupBilecik or Bilety24. The Wałbrzych theatre also has its own online booking and ticket system. Ad Spectatores offers theatre vouchers that work as a gift for a chosen show.
When choosing, go by the name of the stage. Puppets and children: the Puppet Theatre. Light comedy: Komedia. Theatre without words: the Pantomime Theatre. A performance with actors with disabilities: Arka. A classic drama stage: the Polish Theatre in Wrocław, Norwid in Jelenia Góra or Szaniawski in Wałbrzych.
